The story between Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi did not end when their merger plan collapsed. In fact, the most interesting chapter may be starting now. 👀
Recent reports suggest that the three Japanese automakers are approaching a new technology agreement to develop shared electronic control units, known as ECUs, for future vehicles.
🧠 One Electronic Brain for Three Brands
An ECU acts as one of the car’s main electronic brains, controlling functions related to the powertrain, battery, software, connectivity and driving systems.
Sharing this technology could reduce development costs and help the three companies launch new hybrid and electric vehicles more quickly.
⚡ When Could It Arrive?
Vehicles using the common technology could reportedly reach the market around 2029 or 2030.
Several issues remain under discussion, including development costs and responsibilities. However, Honda President Toshihiro Mibe has said that talks are at an advanced stage and that some parts of the cooperation are close to an announcement.
🤝 Cooperation, Not a Merger
The new plan does not represent a revival of the full merger proposal that ended in February 2025.
Instead, the companies appear to be pursuing a more flexible partnership that allows each brand to remain independent while sharing expensive next-generation technology.
