It does not place it inside a quiet laboratory… it sends it directly into the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia! 🇸🇦🔥
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has announced that the DKR GR FC Hilux will compete in the 2027 Dakar Rally.
The experimental pickup is based on Toyota’s Dakar-proven Hilux, but replaces its petrol engine with an electric powertrain powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell system.
🏜️ Saudi Arabia Becomes an Open-Air Laboratory
The Dakar Rally will take place from January 1 to 15, 2027, with King Abdullah Economic City serving as both the starting and finishing point.
The hydrogen Hilux will face sand dunes, rocky unpaved roads, dry riverbeds, high temperatures and long stages that push both vehicle and driver to their limits.
Toyota has deliberately selected one of the world’s most unforgiving environments to discover whether hydrogen technology can truly survive under pressure.
💧 This Time, the Exhaust Produces Water
The fuel-cell system uses hydrogen to generate electricity, which then powers the vehicle.
According to Toyota, the Hilux produces no carbon dioxide while driving, with water as its only tailpipe emission.
However, the real challenge will be maintaining performance and reliability while the system is exposed to heat, sand, vibration and punishing terrain.
🔧 Four Major Challenges for Toyota’s Engineers
The project will focus on four key areas:
Reducing the size of the fuel-cell system.
Improving cooling for extreme desert temperatures.
Increasing durability and reliability.
Managing energy efficiently during long rally stages.
Vehicle construction, software development and powertrain testing have already started in Belgium, with a progressive testing programme planned over the coming months.
⏱️ One Thousand Kilometres Against the Clock
The hydrogen Hilux will enter the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category, which is dedicated to experimental vehicles and emerging technologies.
It will compete across 13 stages covering a total of 1,000 competitive kilometres against the clock.
Toyota’s objective is to demonstrate the performance, safety and reliability of hydrogen fuel-cell technology under real racing conditions.
🚙 Will a Hydrogen Hilux Reach the Road?
The DKR GR FC Hilux is an experimental racing prototype and is not currently being launched for sale in Saudi Arabia.
However, the lessons learned may support future fuel-cell applications in passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, trains, marine transport and stationary power generators.
In other words:
The Hilux fighting through the Saudi desert may never appear in a showroom, but the technology it tests could influence the next generation of Toyota vehicles.
