Competition between American and Chinese automakers is no longer limited to pricing and technology.
In a move that could reshape Europe’s automotive industry, Ford and Geely have agreed to establish a joint venture producing vehicles for both brands at Ford’s manufacturing plant in Valencia, Spain. 🚘🔥
🤝 Five Models from One Factory
The partnership is expected to produce three Ford-branded multi-energy vehicles and two electric Geely models, with the first vehicles scheduled to leave the production line in 2028.
Ford will own 66% of the new company, while Geely will hold the remaining 34%. Operations are expected to begin during the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
🚙 An All-New SUV, Not Just a New Badge
One of the agreement’s biggest announcements is a jointly developed family crossover.
Reports indicate that the upcoming Ford will not simply be a Chinese vehicle carrying a different badge. It will feature a unique Ford design and identity while benefiting from the development and manufacturing experience of both companies.
The vehicle is planned with multiple powertrain options, including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and extended-range electric versions.
⚡ Geely EX5 Leads the European Expansion
The electric Geely EX5 is expected to become the first Geely-branded model produced at the Valencia facility, followed by a second EV that remains under development.
The project will also give Geely its first European manufacturing base, supporting the Chinese company’s expansion across the region.
🐎 Ford Bronco Joins the Production Plan
Ford also plans to begin producing the Bronco SUV in Valencia during 2028 as part of its effort to strengthen its European lineup with more distinctive and off-road-focused vehicles.
The factory has a potential annual production capacity of approximately 500,000 vehicles, making it an important base for both brands.
🇸🇦 Could the Partnership Affect Saudi Arabia?
The agreement currently focuses on the European market, and neither Ford nor Geely has confirmed Saudi availability for the jointly developed vehicles.
However, a successful partnership could eventually produce models combining Geely’s latest technology with Ford’s distinctive design and driving character.
The question now is:
Are we entering a new automotive era in which major manufacturers stop competing alone and begin building their future with yesterday’s rivals? 🔥
